كأنهas though it were ألوانthe hues of دُهْمblack الخيلِthe horses
Abu Hafs’s ink is the saliva of night.
The ink of Abi Hafs is the drool of the night
It is like the hues of black horses.
As if it were the colors of the dark horses
يجريflows إلىto الإخوانِthe friends جَريَthe flowing of السَّيلِthe torrent
بغيرwithout وزنٍweighing وبغيرand without كيلِmeasuring
It flows to friends as a torrent flows,
It flows to the brothers flowing like a torrent
Without weighing and without measuring,
Without meter or measurement
كأنهas though it were منfrom نَهرِthe river of الرُّفَيلِal-Rufayl

As though it came from the river of al-Rufayl.
As if it were from the River of Plenty
Generosity, its hem tucked up, urges it onward
Generosity flows from it like the wagging of a tail

قيْلاًa prince منamong الأقيالthe princes وابنand the son of قَيلِa prince
In giving—and he has always been lavish in giving—
Ceaselessly pouring forth abundance
A prince among princes, and the son of a prince.
Little but invaluable like the son of Qail

إنِّيindeed I إليهtoward him لشديدُsurely strong in الميلinclination
He is neither a sluggard nor a weakling.
It’s not worthless or useless
Indeed, I am strongly drawn to him,
Indeed, I’m strongly inclined toward it

وإنand even if دعاcries out حاسدُهُhis envier بالويلwith woe
Striving for what pleases him, full of stratagems,
Seeking what pleases, very resourceful
Even if his envier cries out, “Woe!”
Even if his envier calls out in anguish
كماas دعاcried out الجَمَّالُthe camel-driver منbecause of سُهيلSuhayl
As the camel-driver cried out because of Suhayl.
As Suhail called out the beautiful one
