Abu al-Saqr is now such that his deeds

Seem to spring from his face.

With kindness he has matched his beauty,

Whose true depths no description can reach.

He has no fault, save that

The eye never falls upon his equal.

O you who approach a pool other than his,

Turn from drinking every other day to his daily draught.

You will find a youth whose conduct lofty honor approves,

In the outcome of what he does and at its outset.

Hopes smile at his cheerful welcome,

And calamities recoil from his rebuke.

    متى تُغازِلُ غيرَه تُلْهِهِ

    No pleasure has distracted him from eminence;

Whenever it woos another, it distracts him.

What he gives you in his dreams falls short

Of even part of what he gives you when awake.

He confronts his petitioners with thousands—

Oh, how splendid that rebuff of his!

His guest's greatest complaint is that

Generosity makes him visit only every other day, against his will.
