While you were busy contriving your boasts,

and men were contending over the daughter of your bed,

misfortune drove you toward me, so you came

forward—and not from any steadiness of heart.

O al-Qahtabi, my fire was not harmed

by the moths of yours that fell into its inferno.

The well-wrought rhymes laughed at you

when you answered my downpour with your drizzle.

Besotted with cocks, in middle age and childhood,

since sucking them cured you of your raging thirst.

And so you will remain all your life—or

be unable to touch them because of your trembling.

By God, how does my truth's coolness feel upon your

heart—or how does it taste in your very bones?

You are not one to deposit water in the

womb, nor is most of your eager delight for women.

You are asleep, old man—wake up!

And heed my counsel, for I am not one of those who deceive you.

You have a female who struts in every nest

and rears the chicks in your nests.

Yet I see you have fondled my cock,

and thought its shrinking was like your own.

Do not let your hopes of it deceive you:

it is not one of the lizards you lure and catch.

A lamb never went beyond your bed, yet

she was never one of your bed's daughters.

After her, no foul stench could rival you—

not even your corpse's, when dug up after ten.

Was it because you were made a follower by Qahtaba of the

champions, as a dog, that you came at me with your snarling?

Then why did you not wait to substantiate your

claim among the clan? You flew before you grew feathers.
