طال تَشنيعُها برغمي عليكا

طال تَشنيعُها برغمي عليكا

I report my wretched state to you;

I come to you with my wretched state

it has long maligned you, against my will.

Its vilification has long burdened me because of you

كلما قلتُ فيك قولاً جميلاً

كلما قلتُ فيك قولاً جميلاً

ناقَضتْهُ وردعُهُ في يديكا

ناقَضتْهُ وردعُهُ في يديكا

Whenever I spoke fine words about you,

Whenever I say something nice about you

it contradicted them; curbing it lies in your hands.

You contradict it, and restrain it with your hands

ولما ذاكَ بالعقاب ولكن

ولما ذاكَ بالعقاب ولكن

بالثواب الذي يُرجَّى ليدكا

بالثواب الذي يُرجَّى ليدكا

And why do so with punishment? Rather,

And why is that with punishment, but rather

with the reward hoped for from your hand.

With the reward expected from your hands

قد تَصرَّفْتُ في نَواحٍ من الأرْ

قد تَصرَّفْتُ في نَواحٍ من الأرْ

ضِ فرَدَّتني النواحِي إليكا

ضِ فرَدَّتني النواحِي إليكا

I have roamed through regions of the earth;

I have wandered in parts of the earth

so those regions have sent me back to you.

Yet all directions lead me back to you
