Say to Abu Sahl, who left the

rough ground smooth through his kindness:

I found myself, O brother of generosity, and

you as an example, our story wondrous:

You give, and I praise; then you follow the draught—the

first of your favors—with a second draught.

Such is our habit: you give generously, and if

    I praise you, you follow a she-camel with a he-camel.

No gift came to me that I rose to acknowledge

among the people without your following it with another gift.

    فما أرى لي بحملهِ قِبَلا

    God is my help with your kindness to me;

for I see no strength in myself to bear it.

I assigned the task of easing your favors' burden

to my thanks to you—but my shoulders grew heavier.

O family of Nawbakht, may I never lose you,

nor exchange you for anyone else.

If the science of the stars is sound, it belongs to you

by right, when others merely claim it as their own.

How many a scholar is among you—not because

he measured, but because he climbed and rose high!

Your glory raised you high in the heavens,

so you are not ignorant of what others do not know.

You spoke face-to-face with the full moon, asking about the

    matter, until you reached Saturn,

and all between this and that; so you do not

    fear missteps, wherever you travel.

You attained—never by calculation, but by the

honors of lineage—your knowledge and accomplishments.

God has set no bond between your knowledge

    and yourselves save your glory.
