Whoever may honor the ignoble, morning finds them

and evening too, in my eyes, in an abode of disgrace.

It is a world they have floated upon, though they say,

“We have risen”—only in conjecture and supposition.

One who floats has not risen, any more than a floating carcass

in the deep waters of a flood,

or a lighter weight rising in the balance,

while the weightier one sinks beneath it.

So turn away from it; it will surely seem paltry to you,

may my father be your ransom, O finest of youths!

And leave whoever it leads with its hopes,

    downcast in spirit, forever sorrowful.

If life in it were serene, then the happiest man alive,

for your perfection, wisdom, and eloquence,

you would be; you will live safe from its misery,

lofty in worth, strong in your foundations.
