Do you not see this lovely, vexing day?

May the Sovereign guard you, ever your protector.

Its overcast sky now demands merriment of those who love it,

And one who says nothing may still claim his due from you.

At times you see a curtain before the sun within it,

And at times you see the sun's watchful eye.

Through what it has bestowed, it has become a gentle friend,

Though fasting makes it a harsh adversary.

It has shown kindness, for its dew now overflows,

And granted relief, for its harm has died away.

And the protected one has no watcher in it,

Just as the singing girls are without their female guardians.

Yet it is the month whose merriment has vanished,

So people's amusements in it have become admonitions.

May God have you fast through it in the shade of bliss,

And preserve you as a vexation that enrages the rancorous,

As reward for the cheerfulness with which you greeted it,

And for opposing the greedy pleasure-seekers during it.

O you whose byname bears the name Muhammad,

May the souls of those who behold you be your ransom, watchful one.

This day of ours has imitated your bounty and its beauty,

When it sets out to guard your renown with care.

Yet it has not imitated your deeds; it has only

Imitated your promise of succor to dying souls.

Nor has it imitated any of your brilliance; indeed,

When you are wintering within it, you are summering.

So live on for one in need and for one in power,

When affairs grow grievously heavy and crushing.
