وعطفاً فأعتبتم بإحدى البوائقِ
Through reproach, I sought from you an increase
Through reproach I sought greater affection from you,
and tenderness; yet you appeased me with one calamity among many.
And tenderness; you answered my reproach with a calamity.

حياً فأصابته بإحدى الصواعقِ
So I was like one asking a miserly sky
So I was like one begging a miserly sky

For rain, only to be struck by one of its thunderbolts.

تؤول بمعشوق إلى هجر عاشق

And who would have thought that asking for more in love
would lead the beloved to forsake a lover?
Would lead a beloved to abandon a lover?
