فتىa youth يبسطspreads out الآمالَhopes حسنُpleasantness لقائهmeeting him
فتى يبسط الآمالَ حسنُ لقائه
ويقبضهاand draws them in منfrom بعدafter نائلهhis bounty الغَمْرُabundant
ويقبضها من بعد نائله الغَمْرُ
A youth whose pleasant welcome spreads hopes wide,
A youth who extends hopes, beautiful is meeting him
And whose abundant bounty then draws them in.
And after attaining him, sorrow takes them away
إلىto أينwhere بالآمالwith hopes بعدafter نوالهhis bounty
إلى أين بالآمال بعد نواله
إلىto أينwhere وافىreached آخرthe end السَّفَرthe journey السَّفْرthe travelers
إلى أين وافى آخر السَّفَر السَّفْر
Where can hopes go after his bounty?
To where do hopes go after attaining them
Where to? The travelers have reached the journey's end.
To where does the journey end after the journey
فكمfor many a نفحةgift فيin كفهhis palm أريحيّةgenerous
فكم نفحة في كفه أريحيّة
طوتfolded up أملاًa hope قدindeed كادnearly يخلقهwear it out النشرunfolding
طوت أملاً قد كاد يخلقه النشر
For many a generous gift in his palm
So many fragrant breaths in his palm
Has folded up a hope that unfolding had nearly worn out.
That folded a hope about to unfurl
