A poem its refiner has brought back

to you, once it was polished at leisure.

Time hurried him, keeping him from taming it,

so it arrived still unbroken, in haste.

Then it grew tame, and its mount emerged

    smooth-backed and ample-rumped.

I did not shrink from bringing it back to you, nor

from setting right the flaws within it,

for I know that you do not

reproach me for what I have corrected in my work.

And one like me does not sleep heedless of a flaw

in praise of the one he praises, nor of a lapse,

especially in praise of one acclaimed,

renowned in name, proverbial far and wide.

And verse, so long as it is not plagiarized,

is forbidden in praise of any impostor.

So let the prince request it a second time,

despite the heaviness that comes with repetition.

And let the prince bear with his servant, even if

he burdens him like one who cannot be borne.
