غُصُنٌa branch ناعمٌtender وبدرٌand a full moon تمامُcomplete
A boy has ruined my repentance for me,
My repentance was ruined by a lad,
A tender branch and a moon at its fullest.
A tender branch and a full moon.
يفضحُputs to shame البدرَthe full moon وجهُهاher face مستَتِمّاًat its fullness

Her face puts the moon to shame when it is full,
The full moon exposes her face completely,
And her figure puts the supple branch to shame.
And the moist rod makes her stand straight.

A Kaaba of fucking, where adulterers perform
The vagina of the beautiful lady is for the adulterers
Their ritual touching each day and night.
A place for prayer day and night.

She is female, yet never does she sway as she walks
She is a woman, but never walked
Without a boy appearing before my eyes.
Except that a boy appeared to my eyes.
عجباًhow strange! منat سقامِthe languor of عينيْكِyour two eyes تُضْنيyou make one waste away

How strange the languor of your eyes: you make one waste away,
How strange are your sick eyes that hurt me,
Yet through her, wasting and sickness are healed.
And are cured by what hurts me and makes me sick.

فألذُّfor the sweetest of الهوىlove المعاصيsins التُّؤامpaired
Mix the wine for me with a boy's saliva,
Mix me a drink with the spittle of a lad,
For love is sweetest in paired sins.
For the sweetest love is sinning together.

Wine intoxicates its drinkers, but the wine of
Wine makes its drinker drunk, and the spittle of
Saliva sobers the lovestruck drinker.
A lad makes awake the drowsy one.
فوقupon خديَّmy two cheeks لجةٌa deep sea منof دموعtears

Upon my cheeks lies a deep sea of tears,
On my cheek a flood of tears
In whose midst patience and reproach drown.
Where patience drowns amidst blame.
لنwill not يطيبَbe sweet الهوىlove إذاif لمnot يُنِرْهُweave it
وتُسدِّيand lay the warp of أثوابَهits garments الآثامsins
Love will not be sweet unless sins weave it
Love won’t be sweet unless enlightened
And lay the warp of its garments.
By sins that cover its clothes.
لستُI am not مُستعذباًfinding sweetness in وصالَunion with حبيبٍa beloved
أوunless تُرىare seen فيهin it ليon my account ذنوبٌsins عظامgrave
I find no sweetness in union with a beloved
I don’t enjoy the union of a lover
Unless grave sins of mine are seen in it.
Or see in it for me major sins.
ماnot ملكتُI possessed الهوىlove وماand not ذقتُI tasted فيهin it
فتساوَىso became equal حلالُهُits lawful part والحرامand the forbidden
Never have I possessed love or tasted it
I never possessed love or tasted in it
And found its lawful and forbidden sides equal.
So its lawful became like unlawful.
حِلُّهits lawful side باردٌcold فماso not كانwas ليfor me مُذْsince
كنتُI was فيهin it بماfor what يحلis lawful غرامpassion
Its lawful side is cold; never, since
Its lawful is cold, so I never had
I have been in love, have I felt passion for what is lawful.
While in it what makes love passionate.
فحلالُfor the lawful part of الهوىlove نبيذٌnabidh (date-or-raisin drink) مُدارٌpassed around
وحرامُand the forbidden part of الهوىlove شمولٌheady wine مُدامaged wine
For lawful love is nabidh passed around,
So the lawful of love is diluted wine,
And forbidden love is heady, aged wine.
And unlawful of love is complete liquor.

Whoever suckles long at the teats of pleasure
Whoever prolongs suckling passions’ udders
Finds weaning hard, as I see it.
Makes it - I see - hard to wean.

So enjoy your flirts and your
Or the days will pass, taking those pleasures away.
Young lovers, else days will pass it by.

Prayer will erase your sins,
Prayers will erase your sins,
And submission, fear, and fasting.
And humility, fear, and fasting.

Hellfire will never touch, I believe, a skin
Hellfire will never touch, I think,
That Islam has clothed in its garments.
Skin covered by Islam’s clothes.
