    A beloved—may God let me see the day I part from him!

    I went astray, and saw no good sense in my love for him.

    I felt for him a pity born of his sheer ugliness

    That softened my heart toward him and drew my affection to him.

    له صورة كالشَّمسِ في الأعين الرُّمد

    So he grew haughty, with a face whose ugliness hurts the eye;

    He has a face like the sun to inflamed eyes.

    And no wonder that one such as he

    Imitated a beloved in haughtiness and rejection.

    If he were not wholly an ape in mimicry

    And ugliness, then the ape's form would not be complete in him.
