عينيَّmy two eyes شُحَّاhold back ولاand do not تَسُحَّاpour forth
جلَّis too great مُصابيmy affliction عنfor البكاءِweeping
My two eyes, stint your tears; do not let them stream—
My two eyes, hold back; do not pour forth tears.
my affliction is too immense for weeping.
My affliction is too great for weeping.
تركُكُماyour leaving (you two) الداءَthe malady مُستكنّاًhidden within
أصدقُmore truthful عنconcerning صحةِgenuineness الوفاءِfidelity
Your leaving the sickness hidden within
Your leaving the malady hidden within
more truly attests to the soundness of your loyalty.
is a truer sign of genuine fidelity.
إنindeed الأسىgrief والبكاءَand weeping قِدْماًfrom of old
أمرانِtwo things كالداءlike sickness والدواءِand medicine
For grief and weeping have, since of old,
For grief and weeping have long been
been two things like illness and medicine.
two things like sickness and medicine.
وماand not ابتغاءُseeking الدواءِmedicine إلاexcept
بُغْياseeking سبيلa path إلىto البقاءِsurvival
And seeking medicine is nothing other than
And seeking medicine is nothing but
seeking a path toward survival.
seeking a path to survival.
ومُبتغِيand one who seeks العيشِlife بعدafter خِلٍّa dear friend
كاذِبُهُfalse to him خُلَّةَa bond of friendship الصفاءِpurity
But whoever seeks life after a dear friend
And one who seeks to live after a dear friend
is false to him in claiming the bond of pure devotion.
is false to him in their bond of pure affection.
