ومولىًand an ally يجرُّdrags الشرَّevil ليto me غيرَnot مؤْتَلِslackening
ومولىً يجرُّ الشرَّ لي غيرَ مؤْتَلِ
ويجنيand commits wrongdoing فيمضيthen goes away وهْوwhile he is عنيfrom me بمعزلِapart
ويجني فيمضي وهْو عني بمعزلِ
And one bound to me drags harm my way, sparing no effort;
And an ally brings evil upon me, sparing no effort.
He commits the wrong, then passes on, remaining far removed from me.
And he does wrong, then goes his way, keeping apart from me.
إذاwhen كانَhe is زنداًa firestick كنتُI am مِسعارَa fire-poker نارِهِhis fire
إذا كانَ زنداً كنتُ مِسعارَ نارِهِ
وكمand how many قادحٍa fire-kindler ناراًa fire لآخَرfor another مُصطليone enduring the fire's heat
وكم قادحٍ ناراً لآخَر مُصطلي
If he is a firestick, I become the stirrer of his flame;
When he is a firestick, I am the poker for his fire.
How often one man strikes a fire for another to bear its heat.
And many a man kindles a fire for another to endure its heat.
