Wakefulness has replaced sleep for my eyes,
The eye was given sleeplessness in place of sleep,
since the gazelle turned from me and forsook me.
When the gazelle turned away from me and forsook me.

A young gazelle lodged anguish in my heart
A young gazelle lodged anguish in my heart
and, with tears, barred my eyes from sight.
And with tears kept my eyes from seeing.

His haunch is a sandhill, and above his waist—
His rump is a sand mound; above his waist
a tender bough made radiant by a moon.
Is a tender bough upon which a moon shines.

His mouth has teeth set delicately apart,
And he has a mouth whose teeth are spaced apart,
and in his eyes, despite their languor, is the beauty of deep black against white.
And his languid eyes have dark irises and brilliant whites.

May my father be the ransom of that beloved who forsakes me!
May my father be ransom for that beloved who forsakes me!
Love has left me no strength to endure separation from him.
Love has left me no strength to endure without him.

You two, divert me from the assaults of memory,
Distract me, you two, from the afflictions of remembrance,
and with the cup drive thought from my heart.
And drive thoughts from my heart with the cup.

And let me hear now a voice for which, so long,
And let me hear now a song at which, so often,
my soul has nearly burst.
My soul has nearly burst asunder:

ومُصلّانا وتقبيلُ الحجر
How lovely are the pilgrimage and the days at Mina,
How lovely are the pilgrimage and the days at Mina,
our place of prayer, and the kissing of the Stone.
And our place of prayer, and kissing the Stone!
