وحَليٌ زانه حسن اتساقِ
Bosoms, with ivory caskets upon them,
Chests with ivory caskets upon them,
and jewelry graced by lovely symmetry.
And jewelry graced by its beautiful arrangement.
يقولsay الناظرونthe onlookers إذاwhen رأوهthey see it
يقول الناظرون إذا رأوه
أهذاis this? الحليthe jewelry منfrom هذيthese الحقاقthe caskets
أهذا الحلي من هذي الحقاق
Onlookers say, when they behold it,
The onlookers say when they see it:
“Does this jewelry come from these caskets?”
“Is this jewelry from these caskets?”
وماand not تلكthose الحقاقthe caskets سوىother than ثُدِيٌّbreasts
وما تلك الحقاق سوى ثُدِيٌّ
قُدِرنthey were fashioned منfrom الحقاقthe caskets علىin وفاقaccord
قُدِرن من الحقاق على وفاق
Yet those caskets are nothing but breasts,
And those caskets are nothing but breasts,
fashioned after caskets in perfect proportion—
Shaped to match the caskets exactly:
نواهدfirm, swelling breasts لاnot يُعَدُّis reckoned لهنagainst them عيبٌa fault
نواهد لا يُعَدُّ لهن عيبٌ
سوىexcept منعpreventing المحبthe lover منfrom العناقembracing
سوى منع المحب من العناق
firm young breasts in which no flaw is found,
Firm, swelling breasts, with no fault counted against them,
save that they keep the lover from embracing.
Except keeping the lover from an embrace.
