My God, grant me refuge from Shunayf and Zirak,
My God, save me from your wicked minister
From the gnawing rat and the scratching cat.
From the gnawing rat and the scratching weasel

For I have seen both traitors
Ravaging people's honor with gnawing and scratching.
Wreaking havoc on reputations by biting and scratching

And after forbearance, I have a devastating onslaught;
And I have a might after patience runs out
And the serpent's lowered head gives warning of its bite.
And the coiling of the snake portends a bite

I see the son of Othman's son loving his boy
When he spends the night mounted by his thin-shanked, ankleted boy.
When he spends the night, his litter shakes

The chess-player spends the night, his anus more enduring,
The chess brother spends the night patient as a boil
And more steadfast under thrusting blows than an old bull camel.
And turns at the impact of the piercer's scratching

As for the Basran's hand in every dish,
As for the Basran's hand in every page
It gouges more than a probe and scoops more than a shovel.
I stop at every curve and draw at every feather

He rushes to wrench away the food, as though he were
He takes the food as if he were
An orphan's trustee, or a shady fellow digging up a grave.
The trustee of an orphan or a pilferer digging graves

I shall engrave a clear line upon his forehead,
I will inscribe a clear line on his forehead
Declaring that he has two glass ring-stones, without engraving.
That he has glass horns without engraving

I blundered; pardon me, for I am a fool,
I forgot, dismiss me for I am heedless
And indeed, his stature is too great for mere provocation.
And he has a status greater than the Guard

Shall I threaten him with verse, when he holds sway
Shall I threaten him with poetry and he is unleashed
Over humankind and jinn, birds and wild beasts?
Upon mankind, jinn, birds and beasts

Have I not seen that, if he wished, he could swallow Tihamah
Did I not see him, if he wished, swallow Tihama
And its mountains, tumbling down there without redress?
And its mountains collapsed there without compensation

Grant me refuge from those gullets, for they are
Save me from those gluttons, they are
Dahanshar and the Durdur whirlpool, O Lord of the Throne.
Chewing wax and the dung beetle, oh Lord of the Throne

He raids the wealth of the minister and his household,
He raids the minister's money and family
Then grazes through their loaves with a vengeance.
So he sulks in their loaf of bread quite the sulk

For all that, he bewails to every companion
Moreover he complains to every lord
His molars, which devour an ox and a ram.
Of molars that come upon bull and ram

He says of them that they are chipped,
He reports about them that they have caries
And that is more fearsome and more effective for crushing.
And that is more painful and definite to scrape

Do you not know that a millstone, when chiseled
Do you not know that when the grinders are tapped
And roughened, consumes the hard and the brittle alike?
And scratched, they come upon the firm and weak

So do not believe that tale of falling apart; beware
So do not accept that separation and beware
His cutting edge, even if by evening he lies shrouded on a bier.
Of similarities even if laid out on a bier

He is the one who grinds discord in every case
Of time, and leaps away from them to the privy.
Of fate and bounces from it to foolishness

He has holes in his pants aplenty
Besides farts that precede the opening with a hiss.
To holes that precede the opening by rending

And I have gotten from the Uthaymi’s honor enough
So do not be base by taking on the base.
So do not be fearful of exposing his shame

But I did not satisfy him until I drew back like a ram.
I have not quenched him until I recoiled like a ram

So leave off mentioning him—may God not sanctify his memory.
Leave his mention, may God hallow his mention
And what have you to do with mentioning beasts of burden and small livestock?
And you are not of the ilk of load and litter
