قدمتَ قُدومَ البُرء بعد سقامِ
علىto دارِan abode إسلامٍIslam ودارand an abode سلامِpeace
على دارِ إسلامٍ ودار سلامِ
You came as recovery comes after illness,
You came to bring relief after illness
to an abode of Islam and an abode of peace—
To the abode of Islam and peace
مدينةthe city of بغدادBaghdad التيwhich كانhad جَدُّكمyour grandfather
مدينة بغداد التي كان جَدُّكم
تخيّرهاhe chose it للمُلكِfor rule دارَan abode مُقامِresidence
تخيّرها للمُلكِ دارَ مُقامِ
the city of Baghdad, which your grandfather
The city of Baghdad, where your ancestors
had chosen as a dwelling place for his rule.
Chose as the abode of the kingdom and settlement
يبشِّرناbrings us glad tidings النصرُvictory الذيwhich قدindeed مُنحْتَهُyou were granted it
يبشِّرنا النصرُ الذي قد مُنحْتَهُ
بأنكthat you are عندin the sight of اللهGod خيرُthe best إمامِleader
بأنك عند الله خيرُ إمامِ
The victory you have been granted brings us glad tidings
The victory you have been granted brings us glad tidings
that, in God's sight, you are the best of leaders.
That with God, you are the best imam
ظفرتَyou won بماwhat تبغيyou seek وسيفُكand your sword مغمدٌsheathed
ظفرتَ بما تبغي وسيفُك مغمدٌ
وماand not كانwas لوif جرَّدتهyou unsheathed it بكهامِblunt
وما كان لو جرَّدته بكهامِ
You won what you seek while your sword was sheathed,
You attained what you sought, your sword still sheathed
and, had you drawn it, it would not have been blunt.
Had you unsheathed it, none could withstand it
