للَهBy God! (expressing wonder) ورّاقٌa bookseller مررناwe passed بهby him
للَه ورّاقٌ مررنا به
فيin صَفِّthe row أصحابِdealers in القراطيسِthe sheets of paper
في صَفِّ أصحابِ القراطيسِ
By God, what a bookseller we passed by,
Allah has a writer that we passed by
in the row of paper merchants!
In the row of writers with scrolls
منamong أصبرِthe most patient الناسpeople علىin enduring صفعهslapping him
من أصبرِ الناس على صفعه
كأنهاas though it were وقعةُa blow فِطِّيسِa sledgehammer
كأنها وقعةُ فِطِّيسِ
Among the most patient of people at being slapped—
The most patient of people to be slapped
as though each slap were a sledgehammer's blow.
As if it were an occurrence with younglings
