أرانيI find myself وماthough not أحدثتُI have done بعدكin your absence سيّئاًanything wrong
تغيَّرتُI have changed والإبريزand pure gold لاdoes not يتَغيرُchange
I find myself—though I have done no wrong in your absence—
I see myself, yet after you I've done no wrong
Changed, while pure gold does not change.
I've changed, while ebony wood does not change
فياso, oh عجباًwhat a wonder والدهرُand time جمmany صُرُوفهits vicissitudes
يَفيkeeps faith ليَwith me إعساريmy poverty وجودُكَand your generosity يَغدرbetrays
So, what a wonder—though time's vicissitudes are many—
How strange it is, while time circles in its course
My poverty keeps faith with me, while your generosity betrays me.
Your presence relieves my poverty, yet betrays
وفَىkept faith ليwith me بَغيضa hated one والتوَىand turned away مَنْthe one whom أحبهI love him
ولَلْشَيبُand indeed gray hair أوفىmore faithful والشبيبةُand youth أغدرmore treacherous
One I hate has kept faith with me, while the one I love has turned away.
An enemy has been true to me, while the one I love has not
And indeed, gray hair is more faithful, and youth more treacherous.
Old age is loyal, youth is treacherous
