Sleep warred against his eyelids, so he cannot
Sleep fought his eyelids, so he found
settle into repose throughout his night.
No rest throughout the night till dawn's first light.

You two, do not begrudge a tear I freely shed;
My plaintive tears could not solace my woe;
for I do not weep with it over abandoned campsites.
I do not weep for what is lost and gone.
لمnot يُخْلقbe created الدمعُtears لامرئٍfor a person عبثاًin vain
اللَّهُGod أدرَىknows best بلوعةِof the burning anguish الحزنِof grief
Tears were not created for anyone in vain;
Tears were not created without destiny;
God knows best the burning anguish of grief.
God knows the depths of sorrow's agony.
أساءdid harm بيto me ماwhat أتيتَyou did منof حَسَنٍkindness
إليَّto me فيماin what مضَىhas passed منof الزَّمَنِtime
It has hurt me—the kindness you showed
Whatever good you brought into my life,
to me in times gone by.
Is now a memory from days of old.
منعْتنيyou denied me بعدكَafter you العزاءconsolation بهthrough it
ياoh ليتَif only ماwhat كانwas منكfrom you لمnot يَكُنِhad been
You denied me consolation in it after you were gone.
After you left, there was no comfort;
Oh, if only what came from you had never been!
Would that what was had never been at all.
