By my life, you have made light of what is no light matter.

Then heed counsel—or give counsel gently.

Have you made light, in my eyes—and folly deserves its name—

of losing a friendship sprung not from mere herbage,

but from noble planting, rising high

in towering growth, neither palm saplings nor stunted palms?

Alas, in God's cause, for a friendship I nurtured

with sincerity's sweet water in an easy temper.

Then, when I tasted its fruits, I found them

more bitter than affliction, more dreadful than killing.

Ah, people, I do not see myself finding

among people anyone cherished for goodness or merit,

nor anyone honoring a friend for anything but his wealth,

even if he is devout, even if he is wise.

How many a man promises fairness toward his fellows,

then, once entrusted with judgments, repents of fairness!

He laments free men under another's tyranny,

then lavishes tyranny on them and grows furious at reproach.

If ignorance ruled the man I blame, I would excuse him,

but the man I blame stands above ignorance.

To you, Abu Abd al-Ilah, I sent these verses,

confident of your forbearance and generosity.

    فإن قلتَ لي مهلاً مشيتُ على مَهْلِ

    Presuming on our intimacy, I ran a far-ranging course;

if you tell me, 'Gently,' I shall walk at leisure.

Yet I must have a word

to stand by—neither unjust nor jesting.

Are you not the one I loved sincerely and chose,

whom long ago I preferred to wealth and family?

Are you not the one I placed hope in and kept in reserve?

Why then, with your pasture lush, do I graze in barrenness?

Set aside all talk of shortchanging and loss,

and turn to a matter greater than that subject.

Do you arrange a gathering such as yours, bringing everyone together,

only for me to be excluded like a low, contemptible man?

Was I, unlike those invited, a speck in the eye,

or the ugliest disgrace at that assembly?

Were my planting-place's emptiness and its being occupied

all the same, though I had been classed as true palm stock?

Is there no friend to weep for a friend's downfall,

even if he was wounded by neither spear nor blade?

Ah, where are those who hold my honor high?

An intruder's dignity has outweighed mine among you.

Ah, where are those who guard my countenance?

Look: it has become more abased than a sandal.

Ah, where are those who preserve their own kindness?

Ah, where are those mindful of the future and the past?

Have the days brought me—may their milk never flow—

to the humiliation and hardship my eye beholds?

Wake up, Abu Abd al-Ilah, for these are

fits of drowsiness that never visit a man who wins the archery match.

Do you abandon me while the cord is firmly knotted,

yet lean toward me and draw near when the cord wavers?

And that is for no fault except that my friendship

has, as you know, no flattery and no deceit.

Consider: we are on a par with the beasts,

save for our justice, now in unravelling, now in twisting.

We surpass them by preferring what is good and doing it,

while we and the beasts are equal in eating.

Does our suffering win us no respect from people

in your eyes? Has one peer no claim upon another?

Does our shared complaining and weeping have no binding claim,

from those nights they drove us from the second draught and the first?

    I offered you examples to awaken you, as a counselor does;

far be such talk from you, and far be such words.

And beyond kinship, writing unites us,

though I know little of the jarib and the measuring cord.

Have you not seen that treachery brought down Ibn Bulbul,

though he had cavalry and though he had foot soldiers?

    فنكِّبْ هداك اللَّه عن سنن التبلِ

    You always blamed him for the very thing I see;

so turn aside—God guide you—from the paths of rancor.

Offer no excuse except one worthy of you,

for you have no failing in branch or root.

How many a reproacher has presented you his reproach,

and you rewarded him with standing and abundant gifts.

    فكيف تراه وهْو في نُهْيَةِ الكهلِ

    Thus we knew nobility in you while it was a child;

how do you see it now, with a mature man's wisdom?

Do not turn away from me to blame my address,

and lodge resentment upon resentment in friendship's breast.

To God I complain that my poetry is wronged,

and that the days leave me at a shallow watering place.

Your praise and affection are for al-Buhturi,

while my praises are for you—may your fondness be spared folly!

If you say, 'Judging rightly has its merit,'

what share of the bees' honey has the man they sting?

Have praises of his about you gone abroad, of a kind that

lays the weight of obligation on those who find the burden heavy?

Or is it that other quality you know?

Indeed, the other quality: unravelling is not like braiding.

Did he not scowl at you with praise like

a blade's keen edge, ranging the lands by night farther than ants?

    وما حلية الحسناءِ بالعاجِ والذَّبلِ

    He lampooned you with paltry, low-grade satire;

a beauty's ornaments are not of ivory and tortoiseshell.

So he won what he had raced for, while resting,

safe, though he made you drink the bucket's sludge.

So it was satire that he satirized you, and that

he refused to let you fully occupy his poems.

I answered him about you with praise like

fresh youth, or a polish on a blade.

Yet you rewarded me with what he deserved:

    withholding, deprivation, rejection, and abandonment.

And you rewarded him with what I deserved:

    kindness, beneficence, affection, and fellowship.

    فلم تَفْرِقوا بين الصواعقِ والهطلِ

    I poured down rain and quenched the thunderbolts assailing you;

but you did not distinguish thunderbolts from rain.

    وما المغزِلُ المعكوسُ بالمحكمِ الغزلِ

    Yes, you did distinguish them—as one who reverses a plan;

a backward spindle does not spin a sound thread.

To God I complain that my sea is brimming,

yet in kindness I have only a shallow watering place.

If sustenance could spare my face, I would guard its moisture

and its speech from where heavy showers and downpours fall.

And spare myself people whom I see

reckoning me base, though I am not base,

and setting me below a man whom, if I outshot him,

they would gain two shares from that contest:

praise to exalt their name, and protection

for their honor, with reinforcements as numerous as grains of sand.

No friend finds that in al-Buhturi,

nor any part of it, as duty or as a free offering.

I have no urge to revile al-Buhturi or defame him,

though one stallion may charge another some day.

I sincerely attest to his noble breeding in poetry,

and I am neither a half-breed nor a mule in it.

Indeed, I know him as one who pours forth the finest wine,

and I too pour forth what is no wine-dregs.

But a fortune he gained and I was denied—

I see his poor fruit as ripe dates, and my ripe dates as poor fruit.

Baalbek and its people have disowned me,

nay, the earth—nay, Baghdad, mistress of rancor.

I see my friend safe from my doing him wrong, but I do not see

him safe from my just requital, even in a mountain refuge.

Let no man be deceived by my gentleness,

for I am a man who takes refuge in stout endurance.

The sword has cutting power beneath the polish that adorns it,

and I possess its polish and its cutting power.

This is no ignorant threat from me,

but a declaration of decisive resolve.

    وكلُّ عتابٍ ذو سَجاح وذو كَحلِ

    I make my speech bitter and sweet in reproaching you;

every reproach has gentleness and harshness.

    In my jealousy, my ostrich grew nimble and raced;

ah, excuse her for rushing because of an ostrich chick.

Do not reproach me for polishing our brotherhood, for

when a keen sword rusts, it is given a fresh polish.

Whatever I say about you, I remain your brother,

in every state, through tight twists and loose strands.

I am not one to eat foul flesh,

nor do I relish properly slaughtered flesh.

How long will sustenance be kept from me, when

my sustenance rests with God alone, not with a husband?

I was never, in earlier days, a co-wife to wives,

that a husband should forsake me and thus please his wife.
