    O bough of moist pearl,

In which the eye and heart find joy.

The day that showed you to me was kind to me,

    And no benefactor deserves reproach.

Yet it left me with anguish,

So my tears pour out, torrent upon torrent.

    Mazluma, you are not wronged,

In the judgment of the people of East and West.

Rather, the wronged one is none but your slave,

    Now slain without any guilt.

    لا تُبْتِ ما عشتِ من الغَصْبِ

    You openly robbed him of his heart;

May you never repent of theft while you live!

Why is one who opposes you at ease,

And one who is loyal to you in distress?

You made peace with the people of war—blessed are they!

But the people of peace are at war.

Through my love, without effort, you have become

Like the soul between my two sides.

May God ease my burning thirst

With a sip of your sweet saliva.

O love of Mazluma, never fade,

And grow, for I can never have enough of you.

Mazluma, you have given our souls over to plunder,

And we are all content with the plundering.

Your playing accords with your voice, never straying

Beyond its bounds; your voice accords with the playing.

As though their sound within the breast

Were rain falling in a season of drought.

You surpassed the singers, just as we were surpassed

By the world's stars, the sons of Wahb.

    كلاهما ذو مطلبٍ صَعْبِ

    Beauty and beneficence have both come together;

    Each is hard to attain.
