    How, O you on whom my life depends,

    have you fared in my absence since you left, my lady?

    Are you still true to the pledge, or have you turned from it?

    May God ordain my death before that.

    ديع والبينُ مُؤذنٌ بشَتاتِ

    I do not forget your patience failing at

    farewell, as parting heralded separation;

    and the tears streaming down like wet pearls,

    fallen from sore eyes,

    ـرين فوق المراشفِ البارداتِ

    in gardens of anemones and wild

    roses above cool lips;

    عنك أيدي النَّوى حِيال الْتِفاتي

    and your turning toward me, when I had been snatched

    from you by the hands of separation, as I too turned back;

    and words that flowed, while longing had within the

    entrails a fire that burned painfully:

    May God surround you with protection and

    favor, and shield you from the eyes of visiting women.
