طيُّ اللقاء له نشورُ

طيُّ اللقاء له نشورُ

فليطوه الجلْد الصبورُ

فليطوه الجلْد الصبورُ

A meeting folded away has its unfolding;

The delight of meeting has its cheer,

So let the stout-hearted, patient man fold it away,

So let patience sheathe it with good cheer,

حتى يعود حديثُه

حتى يعود حديثُه

وكأنه عسلٌ مشور

وكأنه عسلٌ مشور

Until its conversation returns,

That its converse may return once more,

As though it were honey drawn from the comb.

Sweet as honey in the comb does pour.

لا تغترر بطهارةٍ

لا تغترر بطهارةٍ

فيها البشاشة والسرور

فيها البشاشة والسرور

Do not be deceived by purity

Be not fooled by a seeming purity,

In which are cheerfulness and joy.

Where mirth and joy appear so free,

فالقلبُ قلبٌ كاسمه

فالقلبُ قلبٌ كاسمه

منهُ التقلب والفتور

منهُ التقلب والفتور

For the heart is a heart, as its name implies:

For the heart is just as named does imply,

From it come fickleness and languor.

Prone to change and prone to die.
