للحُريثيِّfor al-Huraythi أبيAbu (father of) بكرٍBakr غَبَبْa dewlap
ولهand he has قَرنانِtwo horns أيضاًalso وذَنَبْand a tail
Al-Huraythi, Abu Bakr, has a dewlap;
Abu Bakr al-Huraithi has a protruding forehead
he also has two horns and a tail.
And he has two horns and a tail as well
فإذاso when ماemphatic particle قالhe says إنّاindeed we عَجمٌnon-Arabs
قالsay قرناهhis two horns جميعاًboth قدindeed كَذَبْhe has lied
So whenever he says, "We are non-Arabs,"
So if he says that he is a non-Arab
his two horns both say, "He has lied."
Both his horns altogether say he lied
وإذاand when ماemphatic particle قالhe says إناindeed we عربٌArabs
دفعتْrejected ذاكthat ولمand did not ترضَaccept العربْthe Arabs
And whenever he says, "We are Arabs,"
And if he says that he is an Arab
the Arabs reject that and will not accept it.
That claim is rejected and the Arabs are not pleased
وإذاand when ماemphatic particle قالhe says إنيindeed I شاعرٌa poet
قيلit is said خُذْcaptivate كلَّevery شقيٍّwretch بالطَّرَبْwith rapture
And whenever he says, "I am a poet,"
And if he says that he is a poet
he is told, "Captivate every wretch with rapture."
It is said, let this miserable one perish in agony
ماnot ترىyou see لابنfor the son of حُريثٍHurayth حَسباًancestral honor
أتُراهُdo you think he جاءcame منfrom بَيْضeggs التُّربْthe earth
You find no ancestral honor in Ibn Hurayth;
Do you not see that Ibn Huraith has no lineage
do you think he came from the earth's eggs?
Do you think he came from eggs in the soil?
كَتَمَتْهُshe hid from him أمُّهُhis mother آباءهُhis fathers
فلهذاso for this reason أنكرdenied القومُthe people النسبْthe lineage
His mother hid his fathers from him;
His mother hid his fathers from him
so the people denied his lineage.
Thus the people denied his ancestry
لمhas not تزلceased عِرسُthe wife of حُريثٍHurayth مركباًa mount
لجميعfor all الناسthe people تُحنَىshe is bent للرُّكبْfor the knees
Hurayth's wife has always been a mount
The camel litter of Huraith has never stopped
for everyone, bent beneath their knees.
Being mounted by all people for rides
لكyou have وجهٌa face محكمٌsturdy صنعتُهُits workmanship
ماnot تَرىyou see عُقِّبwas bound with sinew إلاexcept بعَقبْwith sinew
You have a face of sturdy workmanship;
You have an ugly face that I created
you see it bound with nothing but sinew.
I do not see it countered except by a counter-ugly face
جُثَّةُthe body of الكشْخانِthe cuckold تُنْبيreveals أنهاthat it

The cuckold's body reveals that
The body of al-Kashkhan proclaims it
the seed that formed it was pooled from a thousand fathers.
Was conceived from the sperm of a thousand fathers
كلَّevery يومٍday لكyou have فيهِin it نسبٌa lineage
زادكmay He give you more الرحمنُthe All-Merciful فيin هذاthis التعبْtrouble
Every day you have a different lineage;
Every day you are ascribed a new ancestry
may the All-Merciful increase this trouble for you!
May God increase your suffering in this exertion
أنتyou ماnot تنفكُّyou cease منfrom تصحيحهِcorrecting it
فيin عناءٍhardship واشتغالٍand preoccupation ونصَبْand toil
In trying to correct it, you are never free
You do not stop correcting it
of hardship, preoccupation, and toil.
In hardship, occupation, and difficulties
لستَyou are not منfrom نطفةthe semen of فحلٍa stud واحدٍone
أنتyou منfrom كلّevery قريبٍkinsman وجُنُبْand stranger
You are not from the seed of a single stud;
You are not from the seed of one stallion
you come from every kinsman and stranger.
You are from every relative and stranger
عابhe disparaged أشعاريmy poems وفيand in منزلهhis house
كلُّevery عيبٍflaw ومخازٍand disgraces ورِيَبْand suspicions
He disparaged my poems, while in his house
He blamed my poetry while in his house
there is every flaw, disgrace, and suspicion.
Is every fault, vice, and corruption
لمhas not تضِحbecome clear قطُّever لهfor him نسبتُهُhis lineage
كيفhow والأعراقُand the ancestral roots فيهin him لمnot تَطِبْbeen pure
His lineage has never been clear;
Your lineage has never been clear to him
how could it be, when his ancestral stock is impure?
How could it be when the roots in it are not wholesome?
أناI لاnot أشتمُinsult إلّاexcept أمَّهُhis mother
فليزدنيso let him give me more غضباًanger فوقupon غضبْanger
I insult no one but his mother,
I only insult his mother
so let him stir in me anger upon anger.
Let him increase his anger above anger
وليقُلْand let him say ماwhatever شاءhe wishes فيabout شتميmy insulting لهof him
إنindeed طبعيmy nature شيمةٌa disposition لاnot مُكتَسبْacquired
And let him say what he likes about my insulting him;
And let him say what he wishes in insulting me
indeed, my nature is an innate disposition, not acquired.
For my nature is abuse, not acquired
ماwhat لمنfor one who يُغمَزُis impugned فيin أنسابهhis pedigrees
ولِعَيبِand with criticizing الشعرِthe poetry منfrom أهلpeople of الأدبْliterature
What has one whose pedigrees are impugned
What is wrong with one whose ancestry is disparaged
to do with criticizing poetry by men of letters?
And the critics of poetry from the literary people?
إنْif يكُنْhe is يطلبُhe seeks شتميmy insulting أمَّهُhis mother
فلقدthen indeed نالhe obtained الذيwhat منيfrom me طلبْhe sought
If he wants me to insult his mother,
If he seeks my insulting his mother
then he has indeed obtained what he asked of me.
He has gotten what he sought from me
أوor يكنhe is بابنof the son of عِياضٍIyad فاخراًboastful
فلعمريthen by my life فيهin him فخرٌpride وحَسَبْand ancestral honor
Or if he boasts of Ibn Iyad,
Or is he boasting with Ibn ‘Iyad
then, by my life, in him are pride and ancestral honor!
By my life, in him is pride and merit
ماnot ترىyou see فيهin him لهُfor him منany مَغْمزٍa point of reproach
لاno وأنسابِby the pedigrees of حُريثٍHurayth فيin النَسَبْancestry
You see nothing there to reproach him for;
Do you not see in him a single blemish?
no—by Hurayth's pedigrees in genealogy!
No, and the ancestry of Huraith is in genealogy
إنماmerely ناكhe fucked قديماًlong ago أختَهُhis sister
ففَخارُso the boasting of الوغدِthe scoundrel فيin هذاthis السَبَبْconnection
He merely fucked his sister long ago;
It is only his sister who mounted you long ago
so the scoundrel's boasting rests on this connection.
Thus the pride of the despicable one is for this reason
كمhow many لهاfor her منof كربةٍa distress فرَّجهاhe relieved it
بالعياضيّwith al-Iyadi إذاwhen الأمرُthe situation كَرَبْgrew dire
How many a distress of hers he relieved
How many troubles has she relieved for him
with al-Iyadi when the situation grew dire!
With al-‘Iyadi when the matter was grave
كلُّكُمْall of you آلhouse of حُريثٍHurayth عُرَّةٌa disgrace

All of you, house of Hurayth, are a disgrace;
All of you, O family of Huraith, are a pack
may God curse Hurayth and write it down!
May God curse Huraith and inscribe it
