    The daughter of al-ʿAmrī served him, from the wine of her eye

    and her cheek, a cup that kills and leaves one gravely ill.

    So he said, “Mix it with saliva; perhaps it

    will calm love’s intoxication and lessen it.”

    But she turned away a long while, then bestowed a drop of saliva,

    which heightens the lover’s intoxication, leaving him weak.

    وقد تسأل العدل الولاة فتعسف

    So he went away twice as drunk from her mixture;

    and you may ask rulers for justice, only for them to act unjustly.

    Is there, then, any admixture that has increased a drinker’s intoxication

    save the saliva of the woman with the mole—or do you not know?
