كأنَّas though بغدادَBaghdad لدنwhen أبصرتْshe saw
كأنَّ بغدادَ لدن أبصرتْ
طلعتَهhis countenance نائحةٌa wailing woman تلتدمْshe beats her cheeks
طلعتَه نائحةٌ تلتدمْ
It was as though Baghdad, when she saw
As if Baghdad ever since she saw
His countenance, were a mourning woman beating her cheeks.
His rising was a mourner rending her collar
مستقبَلٌa front view منهof him ومُسْتَدْبَرٌand a rear view
مستقبَلٌ منه ومُسْتَدْبَرٌ
وجهُthe face of بخيلٍa miser وقفاand the nape of مُنْهَزِمْa routed man
وجهُ بخيلٍ وقفا مُنْهَزِمْ
His front and his rear:
Facing him and turning from him
A miser's face and a routed man's nape.
The face of a miser standing defeated
