O you who envy me for keeping company with hardship,

and for my censure of Time and brethren,

an envy that drove him to disparage my poetry,

and to meet me scowling and angry,

and to belittle me alongside the enemy, though he once

    saw my shortcomings as merits.

Would that I knew what you envied me for,

O you who openly wrong my brotherly affection.

Is it because I have thirsted, while now

everyone who was thirsty is quenched?

    Or because I walk weary,

and see all the people riding?

Or because I was bereaved of my brother,

    and lost wealth and homelands?

Return nobly to a noble man, as you once

were; otherwise you will meet contempt from me.

Not as punishment for what you say, but

for coldness you followed with abandonment.

And be certain I remain faithful to the covenant

all my life; take that as a guarantee.

I do not count your offenses as offenses,

but as welcome gifts and affection.

Likewise, the offense of every age governed

by the house of Wahb I count as kindness.

And I see their day as a faithful guarantor

of a tomorrow that turns enemies into close friends.

I swear, however hard you tried, never would

my soul count you as anything but a true brother.

So honor our bond, lest you turn against your friend

of old as another Time alongside Time.
