May God's hand protect you, Abu Ali,

and may calamities never alight in your courtyard.

May all hardships be driven far from you,

and may afflictions and sorrows be eased.

I shared with you in bitter affliction, until

the heart nearly melted from pain.

I did not claim credit for that; how could I boast

to one whose kindness to me takes many forms?

But I lamented to you with the lament

of one beset by griefs that constrict the sides.

And how can I be patient when the judge lies stricken?

    Overpowering anguish denied me that.

    Calamities have reached his person,

though faults are far from reaching him.

    Yet God's protection is enough,

even if wars are kindled over a feud.

And kindness is a shield for one who ails,

and happiness, though absent, will return.

    تزول ولم يَحُنْ منها غروبُ

    And cloud cover may conceal the sun's radiance;

the sun disappears, though its setting is not yet due.

So tell the just judge of cases—

may wrongdoers and sinners be his ransom—

Abu Ishaq, may your misdeeds be effaced

by what you suffer, and your sins be purged.

And may you soon be granted recovery,

protected from every calamity that befalls.

For it is not you who have fallen ill, but lofty virtues,

and it is not you who are sick, but hearts.

And you deserve relief, for you are a healer

with a gentle touch when scars bleed.

You judge rightly when you rule; and if we seek

kindness from you, you are rain pouring down.

Joy to you, house of Hammad, joy!

For both the seen and the unseen have proved pure.

Whenever your sides are laid low by illness,

    none among you is fearful of calamity;

and if your sides are raised through recovery,

none among you is given to shameful deeds.

And there is no blame on one whom God has laid low,

and he turns away from what God forbids.

I love you and am grateful for your unalloyed goodwill

toward me, while the rest of the world is tainted.

My breeze from you is always a north wind,

and my wind, when I seek rain, is a south wind.

And no unhappy soul is found in your courtyard,

nor is a liar spurred to praise you.
