إذا ما وصفتَ امرءاً لامرىء
فلاso do not تَغْلُexaggerate فيin وصفهdescribing him واقصدِand be moderate
فلا تَغْلُ في وصفه واقصدِ
When you describe a man to another man,
When you describe a man to another man,
do not exaggerate in describing him; be measured.
Do not exaggerate in your description and aim directly,
فإنكfor indeed you إنif تَغْلُyou exaggerate تغلُrun to extremes الظنوthe expectations (word continues)
فإنك إن تَغْلُ تغلُ الظنو
نcompletes 'expectations' فيهconcerning him إلىtoward الغرضthe mark الأبعدِthe farthest
ن فيه إلى الغرض الأبعدِ
For if you exaggerate, expectations run to extremes
For if you exaggerate, suspicions will grow
concerning him, toward the farthest mark.
Toward him, to the furthest purpose,
فَيضْؤُلso he becomes small منfrom حيثwhere فَخَّمتهyou magnified him
فَيضْؤُل من حيث فَخَّمته
لِفَضْلbecause of the superiority of المغيبthe unseen علىover المشهدِthe seen
لِفَضْل المغيب على المشهدِ
Thus he seems small where you magnified him,
And he will seem less worthy
because the unseen surpasses the seen.
Because of the unseen virtues compared to the visible ones.
