Yours are the auspicious omen and the fortunate ascendant,

and a life so long that no afterward follows it.

Consider—you are the man who casts a single glance,

and sees no lowland but as high ground in his eye,

through keen intelligence and command of every obscurity,

before whose effortless reach effort has long fallen short.

Have you not seen that diligence has been master since it began,

and slackness a slave in every act of kindness?

    وأسديْتَ معروفاً وقد بقي الحشْدُ

    A noble man's favor is completed by reinforcing it;

you have bestowed a favor, but reinforcement still remains.

I accept nothing from you that you yourself do not approve,

and you accept nothing but what glory approves.

When you first set your purpose upon a matter,

and no second resolve follows it, your purpose has not become clear.

And no deliberate act unspurred by confirmed intent

from a man escapes resembling a mistake.

I have many proverbs for that,

which chanters will sing across land and sea.

If you tie a knot and then leave it,

without doubling it with another knot, that knot grows weak.

A first draught, without a second, does not quench thirst,

even if sweetness and coolness aid the water.

Nor does lightning without thunder promise a shower,

but it does when thunder lends it support.

An eye is no eye when it loses its sister,

nor an ear an ear when loss has swallowed its sister.

A hand has no strength without its sister,

nor does a leg, without the other leg, walk or run.

Nothing in need of something to strengthen it

stoops low without making weakness its aim.

    فما عزَّ إلا اللَّه مُسْتَنْجَدٌ فرْدُ

    So reinforce your lone letter with its mate;

for no solitary helper is mighty except God.

Rise, free of blame, above halfhearted effort

to the honor of doing your utmost, and praise will be yours unalloyed.

Grant us more noble deeds; you have never ceased

being generous, until even the base man loves generosity.

And now, O two foremost men of our age,

I confide my anguish to you both: no anguish is like it.

Listen, then, if I complain, for long have I

sung your praises above all other singers.

My two patrons, why have I been denied your bounty,

though your judgment is true judgment, and your pledge a true pledge?

Is it upon me that your thunderbolts descend,

while the ungrateful receive rain and luxuriant soil?

Beneath me, my sandal strikes the earth with all its might,

while beneath another are a saddle and a tall steed that swims along.

No wonder a band gains favor over me,

withholding its praise, while I have praise—and rancor.

Thus lowlands win the torrents over the hills,

though the hills grow green first, before the lowlands do.

Whenever I turn my face and heart away from you both

and go forth in anger, I have good right to be angry.

I testify: you have made me wretched, though

all I was promised before was good fortune, not misery.

    وأخشى فما أخشاه عندكما نَقْدُ

    I hope, but what I hope for is a pledge in your keeping;

I fear, and what I fear is paid by you in ready cash.

    وهل مثلُه حَبْسٌ وهل مثله جَلدُ

    It is nothing but the impact of your reproach;

can imprisonment equal it? Can flogging equal it?

I have no fault; indeed, my innocence

and my excuse are things no denial can conceal.

Does the world turn harsh against me just when it grows gentle,

when the earthquake has stilled and the cradle lies ready,

when one pasture holds the household goat and the wolf,

and now the cheetah has made peace with the sand-gazelle?

Have I, to win your shared approval,

no path, and will no good fortune bring me this?

Have I, to see you both at the head of a gathering,

no opening? No son of fortune would then fare as I would.

There all my good fortunes would flow,

and supple youth and days of ease would live again.

You two are rivals, with beauty and fragrance in you both,

as fresh narcissus and rose vie with each other.

The beauty and fragrance that you both possess

are but excellence of character, its virtues in unbroken succession,

and knowledge and forbearance, not even a portion of which is matched in weight

by Sharawra or Radwa, Arwa or Raqd.

    فإن كان عذلاً جارحاً فهو القصدُ

    I have reproached you both, but my reproach does not wound;

if it is a wounding reproach, that is my purpose.

    It stings at first, but its aftermath brings benefit;

my aim has always been your benefit.

These are your seeds: tend them well, so you may reap

goodness when harvest gathers in the yield.

Beware, both of you, of taking oppression as a companion, for it is

blameworthy and ugly in the talk of those who gather.

    ونحوكما نَصُّ المُشاوِرِ والوخدُ

    Your knowledge of right conduct is what you already know it to be;

and toward you the seeker of counsel hastens and strides.

By God, the worth of the world people vie for

is no match or equal for even part of what appears.

I am only a counselor, burning

with love for you both until his grave is dug.

I have not wavered in conviction or changed in affection,

nor did I speak until I was called a solid stone.

I have come, with my hopes and praise, to you both,

and there is no excuse until a delegation visits yours.

I have come, with my hopes and praise, to you both,

and there is no excuse until a delegation visits yours.
