قُلْsay خالدٌKhalid وخلاكand has spared you ذمُّblame
قُلْ خالدٌ وخلاك ذمُّ
والصبحand dawn أجلحbald-browed لاnot أغَمُّhairy-browed
والصبح أجلح لا أغَمُّ
Say “Khalid,” and you are free of blame.
Say Khaled left you in blame
And dawn is bald-browed, not hairy-browed.

And as though, just then, he were held fast—

his nose muzzled and bridled.
His nose, a bruise and bandage
سيرَىwill see المُدَلِّسُthe deceiver أيَّناwhich of us
سيرَى المُدَلِّسُ أيَّنا
يَخْزَىis disgraced إذاwhen احتشكَgrew crowded المضمُّthe gathering
يَخْزَى إذا احتشكَ المضمُّ
The deceiver will see which of us
The hypocrite will see which of us
is disgraced when the gathering grows crowded.
Is shamed when the wrestler engages
لاnot ينْثَنيturns away عنهfrom him الرُّقاthe charmers (continued)
لا ينْثَني عنه الرُّقا
ةُcompletion of “charmers” فإنهfor he is حَنَشٌa serpent أصمُّdeaf
ةُ فإنه حَنَشٌ أصمُّ
The charmers do not turn away from him,
He is not bent by mercy
for he is a deaf serpent.
For he is a deaf Ethiopian
