1. ادعُني يا أخا العلا وادع عوّا

    ساً ولو كان قبل موتي بساعَهْ

    Invite me, O brother of high rank, and invite ʿAwwās,

    even if it be an hour before my death.

  2. ولك الله والنبي وأهلو

    ه شهوداً والمسلمون جماعه

    And you have God, the Prophet, and his household

    as witnesses, and all the Muslims together,

  3. أنني لا أروع قلبك بالأك

    ل لما فيه عندكم من بشاعه

    that I shall not alarm your heart by eating,

    so abhorrent is it in your eyes.

  4. فإذا جاءني رسولُك أحكم

    ت أموري بالأكل قبل المجاعه

    When your messenger comes to me, I shall set

    my affairs in order by eating before hunger,

  5. وتزوَّدت عند ذاك من الما

    ء بحسب الإمكان والاستطاعه

    and then provision myself with water,

    as far as possible and within my power.

  6. فإذا البول لطَّني لم يكن قص

    دي إلى المستراح والبلاعه

    If the urge to urinate presses me, my aim shall not be

    to seek the privy and the drain;

  7. وتوجهت في الخفاء إلى الشط

    ط ففي مثله لمثلي قناعه

    I shall quietly head somewhere far away,

    for such a place suffices for someone like me.

  8. وفرشت المنديل تحتي وصير

    ت تُكايَى خفِّي مع الدُّرَّاعه

    I shall spread the napkin beneath me and turn

    my leather boot and the tunic into my cushion.

  9. فارض مني بذا اليمينِ وإن كا

    ن يميناً عليك فيها شناعه

    So accept this oath from me, even if

    it be an oath that brings disgrace upon you.
