رأيتُI saw جناةinstigators of الحربwar غيرother than كُفاتهاits fighters
رأيتُ جناة الحرب غير كُفاتها
إذاwhen اختلفتclashed فيهاwithin it الرماحthe spears الشواجرُinterlacing
إذا اختلفت فيها الرماح الشواجرُ
I saw that war's instigators are not its fighters,
I saw the spoils of war unworthy of the strife,
When the interlacing spears clash within it.
When in it the keen lances were diverse.
كذاكlikewise زنادkindling rods النارthe fire عنهاfrom it بنجوةٍsafely apart
كذاك زناد النار عنها بنجوةٍ
ولكنماand yet تَصْلىsuffer صلاهاits burning heat المَساعرthe pokers
ولكنما تَصْلى صلاها المَساعر
Likewise, the rods that kindle fire remain safely clear of it,
Even so is the tinder safe from sparks,
But it is the pokers that suffer its burning heat.
Unless the flames come to do their work.
