And restrain the gushing of my falling tears.

Led toward what he hates by nose-reins.
One who is driven to his hateful fate unwillingly.

Nor is it possible for one who charges headlong to control me.

At the court of Kisra's son, there is a seat for the son of Caesar,
When night and day impose some humiliation on him.
When the two great empires are brought low.

Can necklaces come undone, or the wings of doves?

Their inheritance of Firuzes and Bahrams.

Others climb toward it upon ladders.

By your life, with crowns, not turbans.

And fortunate endeavor—a fine support for a contender.
That confounds the minds of translators.

Leaving of them only stumps.

Leaving nothing of them but fragments.

Of its flavor, even partly, for a day.
Nor a free man impatient toward a freeman.

You find him wronged and much envied,
No hoarder stored, or abundant giver lacked,
Yet see no biter's tooth-mark upon his honor.
Without the fires of sorrows burning him.

Not because his enemies spare him, but because
My agitated heart and the sorrows of love and longing
They saw that blaming him disgraced the blamer.
Are hottest when proven, not every hothead.

Delicate is the embroidery of his elegance, yet his generosity
So do not wrong my heart if my face wastes away,
Is dense with rain, a massing cloud.
For I see harming my honor as the worst of devices.

أخاهُ بنُعْمى اللَّهِ غيرُ مُكاتمِ
He conceals what he has bestowed upon his brother, yet tells
The face does not deserve the shady side
His brother of God's blessings without concealment.
More than a hidden kingdom under thick veils.

When people call the gifts he bestows
We Greeks are a people with lineage and glory,
Extra favors, he calls them a binding obligation.
Wisdom and sharp spears of sturdy timber.

I rose toward him on secondary feathers, hoping
Patience like mountains' pillars and prudence
Through him you would see me rise on primary wings.
That avoids blind ignorance.

When I made resolve kneel, then mounted it
When we commit ourselves, our affairs are systematic,
Toward the noble magnate, chief of magnates,
We do not fret if faces frown.

The envious saw my good fortune before I obtained it,
We are not like people whose concerns are
And paid me their thumb-biting in advance.
Glowing cheeks and sharp razors.

Many a man, needing no counsel once he recalled him, visited him
Those lowly ambitions have been condemned,
And returned without a penitent's tooth being struck.
The worries of girls with downy cheeks.

When I seek him and Muhammad, it is as though
Our mirrors are those that reflect
I rise toward Aws son of Sa'da and Hatim.
Swords tested on skulls, not turning away.

O you who cherish me, hope from God for mercy
When we bare them for an awful day,
Entrusted with tender mothers.
We see softened faces and blunted blades.

He whom a mother begs to pity her son
Our mirrors do not become distracted then
Is surely the most merciful to her and him.
By the shaving we neglect in our ferocity.

Leave a care that cannot last, and rely
They know they are bared only to strike heads,
Upon an enduring replacement in God's care.
Not for shaving cheeks of handsome youths.

He who gives me the sea to ride
Those are our mirrors, they suffice us,
Will preserve me from its clashing waves.
With the face of Father Sahl, bane of foreigners.

Entrust my care, when I am absent, to Him
When it appears to onlookers, it resembles
Who cared for us long ago within the hidden wombs.
His view when faced with complex events.

He is the guardian and shepherd; we and others
A youth I will not call a youth for newness,
Are tended beneath His eyes like grazing herds.
But for noble traits and honest resolves.

Whoever thinks people tend, without Him,
Which come together in a scabbard adorned
Their own souls, let him consider the beasts.
With ornament God allowed none but a sharp sword.

If they are inspired to find their right course
The brother of five charming, beautiful sisters,
Despite their ignorance, let him concede to his opponent.
As harmonious as pearls upon a necklace.

Seek God's good choice for me when I depart:
Beauty, bounty, elegance, help,
That is more useful than reproachers' reproach.
And perception that reveals the unseen, no conjecture.

O who is for you in this world a more wonderful aide,
Has a refuge far from the path of crushing calamities.
Gentle of manner, staunch of might?

A Mercury whom the graceful love,
Long-standing kindnesses have never ceased.
And a surly Saturn he makes peace with.

And say: sadness for one departing
A youth whose names and traits
God will follow with joy at one returning.
Became auspicious in sturdy bodies.

She asked, 'Will you face the sun?' I said, 'That is for shade.'
If people marked foreheads with his praise,
How many a breeze has blown to me from scorching winds!
They would enjoy the sting of needles.

Does my shedding the water of my face on a journey make you weep,
I saw the people either untaught scholar,
When it spares me shedding it before the basest men?
Or unwise sage when tested.

To preserve one's face—no father to you!—is to offer it
But Father Sahl, I saw him
For what wards humiliation from it, O Umm Salim.
With good traits combined, no empty claims.

سؤالُ مصونِ المالِ عندَ المغارمِ
No shelter ever preserved a face degraded
From him I sought wealth and knowledge eagerly,
By asking a man who guards his wealth when expenses arise,
I found him a deep, boundless sea.

Who withholds bounty: asked for a date-stone's speck, he would not
Through him I gained refuge from all I fear,
Be moved from miserliness by any reproacher's blame.
I found him an unyielding mountain.

God forbids my approaching that man's pool, or being seen
He answered when I called a people,
With my hopes hovering around it among the hoverers,
Some slept unaware, some slumbering.

With a response after which I care not
What refuge for a free man equals Abu Sahl?
For one deaf toward me or determined.

And I marvel hearing any called but him
And escaped the fires of persistent worries.
Responding to the stumbling foreigner.

The blaze kindled in the heart and inward parts
A youth whose mention passing by
Is hotter, on examination, than any other blaze.
Still severs the forest, roaming its valleys.

The work of a genius whose bounty proclaimed
See wronging my better part as the worst imposed course.
You in every valley, none tiring of your praise.

Tongues fall silent hearing it

Pain of jaws and repeated beatings clear.

Glory, and stems that withstand testing,
By blows following blows.

Forbearance as weighty as the mountain pillars,
They show resentment that some people see it
And fury from which the jinn of wildernesses flee.
As painful noise midst diversion and revelry.

Are white exposed skin and soft bedding for buttocks.
That made them stop, not piercing veils.

It matters not that the sheikh of Carmathians roused no thought of it,
The concerns of pampered women reared behind curtains.
Nor the sheikh of Dariya.

But in the blades of keen, cutting swords.
When complex events appear to the wise.

They show us the faces of lions lurking in their lairs.
Rather, to every soul asleep or awake.

Cutting throats was distraction enough from that.
Though absent from your eyes, O best of generous ones.

In a memorizing chest I gave you it pure white,
For that, but drawn to strike skulls.
And if presented blackened on parchment.

To shake in its burrows and隅 the shy beasts.

By the radiance of his judgment in a worsening crisis.
By heart, and mouths are armed.

But he, among them, wears them like amulets.
Cutting through forests to reveal their valleys.

Are battered by blow after blow.

He deserves it, and God is the fairest distributor.

Among mankind—indeed, travels by night to every sleeper.
That made them stop, not tearing veils.
وماand not غابis absent عنfrom مكنونthe secret depths صدركof your breast غائبan absent person
وما غاب عن مكنون صدرك غائب
وإنeven if غابabsent عنfrom عينيكyour eyes ياO ابنَson الأكارمِof noble men
وإن غاب عن عينيك يا ابنَ الأكارمِ
No absent man is absent from your heart's secret depths,
It matters not that the Sheikh of Kermān roused no thought of it,
Though absent from your eyes, O son of noble men.
Nor the Sheikh of Dariya.

وإن مُثِّلتْ سوداءَ في رقِّ راقمِ
I have given you this poem, white in a memorizer's breast,
Father Sahl, scourge of foreigners, your face appears
Though pictured black upon a writer's parchment.
When complex events baffle the wise.

Far-ranging, traversing the earth, it never ceases
From him issues a Nile that flows to all settled,
To journey through its highlands and lowlands.
Rather, to every soul asleep or awake.

Though belonging to the ears, it has grown fragrant
No absent is absent to your heart's depths
With your scent, until drawn in through nostrils.
Though absent from your eyes, O best of generous ones!

It travels with remembrance of you that has always crossed,
Through you, vast wastes and climbed mountain passes:

The work of a poet proclaiming your excellence,
Wandering every valley in your praise.

When chanting it, mouths remain
Sweet of teeth and bright of lips.

Ears incline to it at one time, and at another
One kisser after another bends over it.

شجىً ناشئاً بين اللُّهى والغلاصمِ
Take it, to enrage a people who see it
As a choking thing growing between uvulas and throats.

When they fill their eyes with me approaching, it is as though
Their foreheads are drawn tight by cupping glasses.

They tried my flesh and tasted bitterness
That warned them off; they desisted without tearing their gums.

Nor did it harm the poem that no elder stirred his thoughts
For it—neither Yarbu's elder nor Darim's.
