وقدand indeed كنتI was ذاpossessing حالٍa condition أطيلُI prolong ادِّكارهاrecalling it
وإرعاءَهاand lending it قلبيmy heart لأهتزَّso I might thrill مُعْجباfilled with admiration
And once my lot was such that I would linger over its memory,
I once lived in a state whose memory I cherished,
And give it my heart's attention, that I might thrill with admiration.
And whose care made my heart quiver with wonder.
فُبدِّلتُthen I was given in exchange حالاًa condition غيرother than هاتيكthat one غايتيmy aim
تناسِيَّmy deliberate forgetting ذكراهاits memory لتغرُبَso it may disappear مغرباa disappearance
Then my lot was changed to another; my aim
But now my state has changed, my goal is different:
Was to put its memory out of mind, that it might sink from sight.
To forget those memories, so they disappear like sunset.
وكنتand I used to أُديرI pass around الكأسthe cup ملأىfull رَويّةًbrimming
لأجذْلَso I might rejoice مسروراًdelighted بهاby it ولأَطرباand so I might be exhilarated
And I would pass around the cup, full and brimming,
I would lift the cup, filled to the brim,
To rejoice, delighted by it, and thrill with pleasure.
To revel happily, carried away with joy.
وكانتand it was مزيداًan increase فيin سروريmy joy ومُتعتيand my pleasure
فأضحتْthen it became مفرّاًa refuge منfrom هموميmy cares ومَهرباand an escape
And it added to my joy and pleasure;
She brought me more happiness and pleasure -
But it became a refuge from my cares and an escape.
Now she flees from my troubles and sorrows.
