إنif كنتَyou are منfor جهلِignorance of حقّيmy due غيرnot معتذرٍapologetic
إن كنتَ من جهلِ حقّي غير معتذرٍ
وكنتَand you are منat ردِّrejection of مدحيmy praise غيرَnot مثَّئبِashamed
وكنتَ من ردِّ مدحي غيرَ مثَّئبِ
If you offer no apology for not knowing my due,
If out of ignorance you will not apologize for wronging me,
And feel no shame at rejecting my praise,
And if you will not repent for rejecting my praise,
فأعطنيthen give me ثمنthe price of الطِّرسِthe sheet الذيwhich كُتبتْwas written
فأعطني ثمن الطِّرسِ الذي كُتبتْ
فيهin it القصيدةُthe poem أوor كفّارةatonement for الكذِبِthe lies
فيه القصيدةُ أو كفّارة الكذِبِ
Then give me the price of the sheet on which was written
Then pay me for the papyrus on which the ode was written,
The poem—or an atonement for the lies.
Or make amends for the lies.
