عليكَto you إذonce ثُقِّفتْit was polished علىat مَهَلِleisure
A poem its refiner has brought back
A poem its author disliked
to you, once it was polished at leisure.
When you were cultivated at leisure, my friend
أعجلهhurried him الوقتُtime عنfrom رياضتهاtraining it
فأقبلتْso it came ريّضاًstill unbroken علىin عجلِhaste
Time hurried him, keeping him from taming it,
Time rushed it from its grooming
so it arrived still unbroken, in haste.
So it came, its back sore with exertion
ثمthen استراضتْit grew tame فجاءso came مركَبُهاits mount
مُمْتَهَدَsmoothed الظهرِthe back مُردفَample الكَفَلِthe rump
Then it grew tame, and its mount emerged
Its shoulders weighed down
smooth-backed and ample-rumped.
I did not shy from imposing it on you

I did not shrink from bringing it back to you, nor
Or mend its imperfections
from setting right the flaws within it,
For I know you don’t reproach
لأننيbecause I عالمٌam aware بأنكthat you لاdo not

for I know that you do not
What I improve of my work
reproach me for what I have corrected in my work.

So let the prince accept it again
فَلْيَسْتَعِدْهَاso let him request it again الأميرُthe prince ثانيةًa second time

So let the prince request it a second time,
Despite the burden of repeating it
despite the heaviness that comes with repetition.

And let the prince bear with his servant, even if
Though it weigh with an unbearable weight
he burdens him like one who cannot be borne.
