Say, you two, to him who faulted his panegyrist's verse:

Do you not see how trees are put together?

In them are joined bark and wood that is

dry, and thorns, with fruit among them.

And more deserving of refinement was what

the Lord of lords creates, not mortals.

Yet that was not so, but a different state

of affairs, for a purpose decreed by fate.

And God knows better what He plans

than we do; in all He decrees is what is best.

So let people excuse whoever does poorly, and whoever

falls short in poetry: he is human.

The quest for it is like diving into the depths of the

deep sea: danger lies between one and its pearls.

And let them remember that, for it, the

mind is taxed, and thoughts are worn out in composing it.

And in it is what careful selection takes—

costly, precious things—and in it is what it leaves.

    And whoever dives cannot avoid

dredging up both what is chosen and what is scorned.
