إذا ما مدحتَ الناقصين فإنما

إذا ما مدحتَ الناقصين فإنما

تُذكّرهم ما في سواهم من الفضلِ

تُذكّرهم ما في سواهم من الفضلِ

When you praise those who are lacking, you only

When you praise the inadequate, you only

remind them of the excellence in others.

Remind them of the virtue in others

فتهدي لهم حزناً طويلاً وحسرةً

فتهدي لهم حزناً طويلاً وحسرةً

وإن منعوا منك النوالَ فبالعدلِ

وإن منعوا منك النوالَ فبالعدلِ

Thus you give them lasting sorrow and regret,

So you lead them to prolonged sorrow and regret

and if they withhold bounty from you, they do so justly.

And if they withhold provision from you, it is with justice
