ودرعٍand a coat of mail إذاwhen أناI أسلمتُهاI surrender it
ودرعٍ إذا أنا أسلمتُها
وقتْنيit protects me وإنand if أحمهاI protect it أُكلمِI am wounded
وقتْني وإن أحمها أُكلمِ
And a coat of mail that, when I surrender it,
When I hand over my coat of mail,
protects me; yet if I protect it, I am wounded.
It wounds me though I seek to hide my hurt;
هوit is المالُwealth إنif أُعطهI give it أهلهُthose entitled to it
هو المالُ إن أُعطه أهلهُ
يَفِرْنيit safeguards me وإنand if أُعفهI spare it أُذممِI am censured
يَفِرْني وإن أُعفه أُذممِ
It is wealth: if I give it to those entitled to it,
Wealth, if I give it to its folk,
it safeguards me; yet if I spare it, I am censured.
Frees me, but if I am excused, I'm blamed.
