O you, hope in whom gives the soul repose,

and through hope in whom it attains its wished-for goal:

    فاصرفْ بطرفك عن جلالِ جليلِهِ

    My standing with you is an ally of my affliction;

so turn your gaze away from its lofty majesty.

    فَتَخَطَّ قدْري وانْسَ نُبلَ نبيلِهِ

    Your bounty now makes wealth seem paltry to me;

so pass over my standing and forget its noble dignity.

And give your servant whatever is available, for he

is in a plight that irritates his friend's eyelids.

And you will surely bring him to wealth, but he

must be kept going before he becomes wealthy.

Do not scorn the gift whose bestowal upon him

revives his soul and slays his burning thirst.

And allot him his sustenance from your hand's bounty,

and resolve, when your means expand, to improve his lot.

And rein in your soul's unruliness toward him, for it

refuses any kindness but the lavish kind.

And pardon him for pressing for relief,

because of his dire need to have it hastened.

And he would allow more time than others,

if want would kindly grant him respite.

And know—though I teach you no new truth—

that separation permits no scorn for even a little of it.

Every gift is aid to its recipient

in dire need, and an adornment to its giver.

He is no generous man who buys the sun of glory

and life for its renown with his starving dependent's death.

O you who give bounty in abundance,

and bring relief with a little before bestowing much,

so seek sound judgment, not guidance gone astray,

for yours is the loftiest gaze upon its beauty.

And when we attain our hopes, then apply yourself

to the breadth and length of your deeds among mankind.

And many a generous-handed man has called a petitioner stingy,

then struck him with deprivation for calling him stingy.

And sometimes a young man suffers through his generous patron [uncertain reading],

and sometimes a young man prospers through his date palms [perhaps: his miserly patron].
