Say to Abu Sahl, who inherited from the

Romans and Persians the subtleties of the sciences:

As for my pledges, they have always been an endowment

for you; set endowments of your own to match them.

How many a pause of yours I used to know,

counting it as companionship whenever we met!

So why has it been changed, and followed

by doubt that unsettles unruly natures?

You killed what lived of our affection

unjustly; so let a wedding feast follow the funeral.

You are a physician, so do not be ill-tempered,

    and medicine rejects ill-tempered natures.

And let affection recover from illness,

and do not bring a fresh relapse of its ailment.

I reproached you, unwilling to lose you—not idly—

so that I might renew the bonds worn threadbare.

And such has always been the way of one

who hones his words and one who is discerning.

The reproaches of the sincere speak aloud,

and I do not love mute reproaches.
