النُجْحُ سُؤْلي فإن ألوى به قدرٌ

النُجْحُ سُؤْلي فإن ألوى به قدرٌ

فاليأسُ سُؤْلي وتَرْحاً للمواعيدِ

فاليأسُ سُؤْلي وتَرْحاً للمواعيدِ

Success is my wish; but if fate snatches it away,

Success is my hope, though fate may thwart it,

then despair is my wish, and woe to promises!

Yet despair is my hope, and farewell to promises.

يا حبّذا ظلُّ خالٍ غير مُطْمِعَةٍ

يا حبّذا ظلُّ خالٍ غير مُطْمِعَةٍ

أو صوْبُ تلك المبَاريق المواعيدِ

أو صوْبُ تلك المبَاريق المواعيدِ

Ah, how welcome the shade of a cloud that raises no hopes,

Oh, blessed is the shadow of an empty dream,

or rain from those lightning-flashing clouds of promise!

Or the lightning of those swift promises.

لَفَوْتُ ما أمَّلته النفسُ أرفقُ بي

لَفَوْتُ ما أمَّلته النفسُ أرفقُ بي

من حَيْرَةٍ بين تقريب وتبعيدِ

من حَيْرَةٍ بين تقريب وتبعيدِ

Indeed, missing what my soul hoped for is kinder to me

To lose what my soul hoped for is kinder to me

than bewilderment between being drawn close and pushed away.

Than confusion midst bringing near and pushing away.

أصبحت في مأتم من سوء رأيكُمُ

أصبحت في مأتم من سوء رأيكُمُ

والناس في عُرُسٍ منكم وفي عيدِ

والناس في عُرُسٍ منكم وفي عيدِ

I find myself at a funeral because of your ill judgment,

I woke in grief due to your poor judgement,

while people, thanks to you, are at a wedding and a festival.

While people rejoiced with you and celebrated.
