O you who rise above needing our help,

Self-sufficient through the intellect and learning within you.

Had you sought help from a soul other than ours,

Or other than your own, we would have met you with anger.

But you found sufficiency in a soul with no equal

In verse and prose, in poetry and speeches.

And no blame falls upon one seeking advantage

Who sold silver for twice its amount in gold.

So grant pardon, for the excellence of that with which you bought the best,

As we pardoned you, O son of glory and ancestral honor.

Pardon for pardon—or else you will depart carrying

Reproach for reproach—and my reproach is the worst burden to bear.

And take your scroll: indeed, we are flinging it away,

Just as you flung away what we said, at close range.
