فغداso became المحبُّthe lover منعَّماًpampered ومعذَّباand tormented
He pleased me with his beauty, then turned away and angered me.
He was pleased with his image and barred, so the lover became blissful yet tormented
So the lover became both pampered and tormented.

O face of the one I love, you have indeed appeased me;
If only the attainment of the unattainable would blame
If only his withheld bounty would appease me too.

A gazelle whose beauty God seems to have perfected
To anger a flock or plot against a doe
To vex a herd or rival a company of gazelles.

Languid in coquetry, when he struts, one is bound
And when he speaks he enraptures
By his movements; and when he speaks, he enchants.

Possessing a form lovely and beautiful to behold,
And clear drink that purifies and gives pleasure
And lips clear and sweet to drink from.

Their hearts therein found perturbation
Their hearts find there a place to turn.

Wearing two protective charms across his chest, he is frightened
That which he does not fear though he has captured whom he captured
By what need not be feared, though he has captivated so many.

Armed against the evil eye, but adorned
Save by what Allah fashioned and assembled
With nothing except what God fashioned and formed.

He measured clothes and ornaments against his face,
And saw the beauty of his face excel them
And, seeing his face's beauties, stripped off his adornments.
That beauty enriched him beyond need of finery

That beauty freed him from needing those ornaments,
And that fragrance sufficed that he scent himself
And that fragrance spared him any perfuming.

When day and night bring bitter cold or blaze.

While he in truth merits guarding and veiling
And he deserves to be protected and concealed.

In a shell, jealously guarded lest it fade.

From the eye of his lover! Wonder at that!
From his lover's evil eye—behold, marvel at it!
Does he fear my eyes when I was killed by love of him?

He inverted the tale as he wished to invert it
He has reversed the story just as he wished it reversed.

In a scorpion-curled temple-lock upon him, I encountered
A viper that wounds my heart and a scorpion
A viper tormenting the heart, and a scorpion.

Bringing a claw down upon my liver and my heart.

What Allah made lawful for us and purified
Among what God has made lawful and good for us.

An appealing alternative to the foul things he forbade?

The Imam's piety and his awe-inspiring might.

In the hand of one who defended, gave generously, and disciplined.

Allah is Greater, and the Prophet is Muhammad
And secured a worldly livelihood for humankind.

God is greatest, and Muhammad is the Prophet,
The Imam was granted after his enemy's destruction
And the caliph's son is victorious, never to be defeated.

The Imam was granted, just after his enemy's death,
His prophecy was true, and he succeeded, so his state proved false
A son, through whom the Imam rejoiced and begot nobly.
The enemy perished, and the Imam endured and begot
صدقتْproved true بشارَتُهُhis glad tidings وأفلحand succeeded فألُهُhis omen

His glad tidings proved true, and his omen prospered:
He gave us hope anew, and dashed the deceiver
The foes perished, the Imam survived, and had offspring.

Still loving and obeying the Imam are his wont
Who had gathered supporters for corruption and incited them.

The Imam was granted with a son after his absence
Live, and whoever opposes him meet destruction.

What a son, by God, who came when our spring
Fate smiled at him the smile of one saying
Was firmly established, and our land had grown fertile!

ياO مرحباًwelcome بابنto the son الخليفةof the caliph مرحباwelcome

Time smiled upon him with the smile of one saying,
So his birth was a harbinger, all of it
Welcome, son of the caliph—welcome!

Thus he came, his birth entirely a herald
A mention that shone as if the brightness of his face
Of victory—a herald like this could not prove false.
Was the Imam's view when the horizon lit up
ذكرٌa male child أغرّradiant كأنَّas though غرةthe brightness وجهِهِof his face

His safety after birth guaranteed
The Imam's judgment when it lights the deepest dark.

At his birth, his nobility was vouched for
The Imam attained, though his journey was hard
By a moon and a sun, who brought him forth and shone like stars.

He came to the Imam, whose departure was now urgent,
Truly, the herald spoke with his right hand
An arm to aid against calamities, and a shoulder.
And perhaps the herald spoke eloquently

Truly, the herald spoke of his good fortune,
So excellence to you! I will not blame him, nor
And often a herald speaks and makes things plain.
Will I blame the oryx or the kicking mule

An omen, by your life, I did not read from birds, nor did I read
I saw him the moon-like warbling in green
In it a left-crossing beast or a head-on beast with a broken horn.
Pastures, ripe with produce, not dried-up

None of the feet of kings were met like him
Green and rich with ripe fruit—not as a roller.

No army of kings ever encountered its like
So let the Imam resolve, for he
Except to gain dominion over east or west.

Let the Imam carry through his resolve, for he
A king, when kings darken their path
Has brandished from it a keen-cutting Mashrafi sword.
In their kingdom, rode the paved road

Good fortune is bound to him, a help to him,
His height prevents him from seeming arrogant
A shade over him when the midday heat blazes.
And might protects him from appearing withdrawn

What he has hoped for, taming whatever proved difficult.
And if you clash, you clashed with one solid and stiff

His steps were still hoped for, for his chastity
Spoils drawing near, and quarry come within reach.
And his refusal still anticipated

A lion has come upon a wild ass in the garden,
Pardoning is his nature, but he
And a falcon overshadows a hare on the plain.
Forgives when forgiving is best

The spearhead has found a place to pierce in the quarry,
So if a transgressor transgressed, his eye overlooked
And the sword has found a place to strike in its target.
His sin as if he had not sinned

Let no doomed man perish opposing the caliph:
And if the treacherous persisted in their treachery
The Imam has offered men inducements and inspired fear.
He severed the noses from the foreheads and frightened them

O you who compose praise of the Imam and seek
In ruling, takes the broad and open path.
The breaths of his attainment, you have gone astray

His bounty raises him above being seen as arrogant,
An affliction from pouring rain befell you
And his dignity shields him from presumptuous familiarity.
And a cloud saw in affliction a downpour

As for his enemies, they found no escape
And rouse in him a resourceful Hashimite.

He sought the hand of the gentle in marriage and had he not
But when you strike him, you strike what is hard and solid.
His virtues, the request would not be sought

His kindness has long been expected
He shot the necks of the traitors with his arrows
By his petitioners, and his severity awaited.

Forgiveness is his nature, yet he
Whenever God wills, he shortens a term
Forgives when forgiveness is the wisest course.
And when He ordains, He desires a consequence

From the offense, as though he had never sinned.
That judges the case that will not be criticized

Our Imam's life will lengthen in bliss
He lops noses off at the brow, cutting them away completely.
Until he is accompanied by a retinue of his sons

And herald him to the noble man struck by drought.
He will be seen as seventieth of seventy elders

لوif لاnot for مكارمُهhis noble generosity السؤالpetitioning ليُخطبَاwould be courted
He courted petitioning from those who seek his bounty, though
I found many good omens for him
But for his noble generosity, petitioning would never be courted.
And did not, like others, shoo away the fox
ورمىand shot at نحورthe throats الخائنينof traitors بسهمهِwith his arrow
وتِراسُهمand their shields قَدَرُthe allotted term البقاءِof life فماso not نباit glanced aside
And he shot his arrow into the throats of traitors,
The Caliph's due is that I prolong his praise
Whose shields were their allotted span of life; it did not glance aside.
But I was concise though inclined to babble
ومتىand whenever أرادwills اللَّهُGod قصَّرَHe shortens مدةًa term
وإذاand when قضىHe decrees فأرادand then wills أمراًa thing عَقَّباHe brings it about
Whenever God wills, He cuts a term short,
His hands lengthened upon my tongue so it ceased
And when He decrees and wills a thing, He brings it about.
That eloquence, and I ceased though given to babble
وأقولُand I say قولَthe words مسدَّدٍof one guided aright فيin زجرهِhis augury
يقضيhe decides القضيةthe matter لمnot يكنwas he ليؤنَّباto be reproached
And I speak the words of one unerring in his augury,
Who settles the matter and deserves no reproach:
سيطولwill be long عمرُthe life إمامناof our Imam فيin غبطةhappiness
حتىuntil يواكبَhe accompanies منfrom بنيهhis sons موكباًa procession
Our Imam's life will be long in happiness,
Until he accompanies a cavalcade of his sons.
مقلوبُthe reversal كنيتهِof his kunya يُخَبِّرtells أنهthat he

His reversed kunya foretells that he
Will be seen as father to a seventh of seven radiant sons,
حتىuntil تراهyou see him فيamong بنيهhis sons قدhaving احتبىsat with knees drawn up
فَيُخالso he is imagined as يذبُلَYadhbul فيamong الهضابthe hills قدhaving احتبىsat with knees drawn up
Until you see him seated with knees drawn up among his sons,
And he seems like Yadhbul seated amid the hills.
ولقدand indeed أتاهcame to him مُبَشِّرانtwo heralds بخمسةٍwith five
ردَّmay restore الإلهُGod علىto الإمامthe Imam الغُيَّباthe absent ones
Two heralds have brought him glad tidings of five;
May God restore the absent ones to the Imam.
ليرىso may see الإمامthe Imam تكهُّنيmy divination وتَطَيُّبيand my good augury
فلقدfor indeed تكهَّنhas divined عبدُهُhis servant وتطيَّباand taken good omens
Let the Imam behold my divination and my good augury,
For his servant has divined and taken good omens.
إنيindeed I وجدتfound لهfor him فُؤُولاًgood omens جمَّةًabundant
منهfrom him ولمand not أزجُرI read omens from كغيريlike others besides me ثعلباa fox
I have found for him abundant good omens
In him, and unlike others I have not read omens from a fox.
حقُّthe right الخليفةِof the caliph أنthat أُطيلَI lengthen مديحَهُhis praise
لكننيbut I أوجزتُwas brief لماbecause أطنباhe was expansive
The caliph deserves that I lengthen his praise,
But I have been brief because he was lavish.
طالتoutstripped يداهُhis two hands علىbeyond لسانيmy tongue فانتهتْso ended
تلكthat البلاغةُeloquence فانتهَيْتُso I stopped وأَسْهَباand he went on at length
His hands outstripped my tongue, and so ended
That eloquence; I stopped, while he went on at length.
