إِذاwhen جِلتI roamed فِكراًin thought فيin العُلومِthe sciences عَويصِهاtheir intricacies
وَمادَتand swayed بِيَwith me الأَفراحُjoys كُلِّevery مُميدِswaying motion
When I roam in thought through the intricacies of the sciences,
When I exert my mind on science’s abstruse ways,
And joys set me swaying in every way,
And joys rain down on me each fresh and dewy morn,
تَصاغَرَتِgrew small الدُنياthe world لَديَّto me وَأَهلُهاand its people
وَجِئتُand I came بِماwith what يَشفيquenches غَليلَthe burning thirst of مُريدِa seeker
The world and its people grow small in my eyes,
How small the world appears to me, its people too!
And I bring what quenches a seeker's burning thirst,
I come with what will soothe the yearning novice’s heart.
وَنِلتُand I attained لَذيذَthe sweetness of العِلمِknowledge بِالذَوقِthrough taste وَحدَهُit alone
وَكُلّand every لَذيذٍdelight غَيرُهُother than it كَهَبيدِlike colocynth seeds
And I attain the sweetness of knowledge through taste alone,
I’ve tasted science’s sweetness through its taste alone,
And every other delight is like bitter colocynth seeds.
While all else’s sweetness is like flakes of dust.
