يَتَفَيهَقُspeaks pompously الغمرُthe inexperienced fool المُغَمَّرworthless مُسهِباًat length
وَالمِصقَعُand the eloquent speaker العِدُّinexhaustible in القَريحَةِnatural talent موجِزُis concise
The worthless fool speaks pompously at length,
The overwhelming tide pours forth profusely
And the eloquent speaker, with inexhaustible talent, is concise.
And the driving rain, numbered drops, concise
وَاللَهُand God يَعلَمُknows أَنَّthat هَذاthis one عاجِزٌis incapable
فيماin what يَقولُhe says وَأَنand that ذَلِكَthat one مُعجِزُis inimitable
And God knows that this one is incapable
God knows that I am helpless
In what he says, and that the other is inimitable.
In what I say, and that that is a miracle
كَالوَعدِlike a promise يَقوىcan المُخلِفونَpromise-breakers بِحَملِهِbear it
وَيَهابُand fears عُهدَةَthe responsibility عَقدِهِof pledging it مَنwhoever يُنجِزُfulfills
As with a promise: promise-breakers can shoulder it,
Like a promise, those who break it are strengthened by its burden
While whoever fulfills it fears the responsibility of pledging it.
And those who fulfill it fear the weight of its bond
