أَتيجِرتُO Tijirt هَذاthis النّيلُthe bounty بِاللَهِby God خَبِّريtell me
بِجودِby the generosity of غَمامٍclouds أَمor بِجودِby the generosity of يَديthe two hands of مِسكاMiska
O Tijirt, tell me, by God: is this bounty
This Nile, I ask by Allah, tell me -
from the generosity of clouds, or from the generosity of Miska’s two hands?
Is it by the generosity of clouds or my hands that it flows?
هُماthey both يَقذِفانِcast forth النوقَthe she-camels قَبلَbefore سُؤالِهِasking him
وَالأَبحُرُand the seas بَعدَafter الغَوصِdiving إِعطاؤُهاtheir giving السَمكاthe fish
They both cast forth she-camels before he is asked,
Both cast fish before being asked.
whereas the seas give fish after diving.
And the sea, after diving, gives fish.
وَماand not مِسكَMiska إِلّاexcept جَنَّةٌa paradise دُنيَوِيَّةٌearthly
بِهِthrough him أَضحَكَmade laugh اللَهُGod الوَرىhumankind وَبِهِand through him أَبكىmade weep
And Miska is nothing but an earthly paradise;
What I hold is but a worldly paradise,
through him God made humankind laugh, and through him made them weep.
With it Allah makes the world laugh and weep.
